Posts: 2397 Sep 20 08 5:58 AM	I just watched this again last night. A completely free-form experiment in dream pathology which ends with a scene of soul travel or life after death. I love movies which show life after death: Cocteau's ORPHEE underworld/other side of the mirro (a future Franco title) especially. It opens with a shot of a body of water and closes with one (the river Lethe of Hell?). I also noticed some amusing "goofs" you might call them but I find them charming: when Basilo (Uncle Jess) enters to pick up Christine at the hotel (he is wearing a bright pink shirt) when they are in the car driving to Montserrat he is suddenly wearing a white shirt with black designs[1], of course it's just probably a continuity flub which some will say prove the director's "laziness" or "ineptitidue" but I find these "mistakes" to be very entertaining and what make Franco special. Posts: 1275 Sep 20 08 5:53 PM	You find such clothing mistakes in big studio releases...in films by Preminger and Woody Allen. The script girl is only human after all. I get the feeling that the car scenes (who's driving it? A nice evasion) were shot later as an afterthought and this may have complicated continuity matters.

Franco often makes an entire film out of "afterthoughts", which is the result of his general preference for treatments over formal scripts and love of improvisation. You are probably correct, he's later seen wearing that shirt in the castle. Actually, I like the extreme wide-angle lens used in the car scene and the way it rapidly cuts POVs to the foilage and road, giving it an onieric quality, along with the fact that we indeed don't see a driver. Posts: 2397 Oct 16 08 12:39 PM	Anyone knows anything about this? Thanks to Squonkmatic, I have this on DVDR. The 1980s era WIZARD VIDEO of VATLD had nudity blacked out. MV includes all the "zombie" footage, reportedly shot by J Rollin, and added in the 1980s, it also includes extra footage shot in the 70s by another Eurocine director of Alice Arno, as a nude queen on a throne, presiding over a bucolic "orgy" with Eurocine regulars participating. It's all the footage from all the variants of the film put together in one 105m composite. Of course, it distorts the original film, but it does contain some interesting historical footage, like the stuff with Arno and co. I'm still trying to ascertain who shot this particular footage. Posts: 2 Jun 11 09 11:26 AM	Hi guys! Actually I'm from America. I bought it from Amazon.com's Marketplace, the odd thing about it is even though it's a British VHS, it plays in my NTSC standard-only VCRs. So the tape isn't in the U.K. PAL video standard. This makes no sense.

Also, is this letterboxed at 1.66:1? Does it contain nudity? Could this have been dubbed from PAL? I wonder if this also plays on PAL players. Thanks. Posts: 53 Jun 12 09 10:10 PM	Over in Britain I've dug out my copy of the above Horror Theatre VHS. The film is timed at 87 min 4 secs. There is no nudity and there's a purple fogging over the naughty bits on occasion. Rollin's zombies are included. I only fast forwarded through so haven't watched it all for some time. It's not letterboxed at all, just tv shape.

I like the ending where all the characters end up walking into the swamp which has mythical associations with Lethe, the river in Hell. If that scene is missing from this version then that would be a serious omission. In fact, it's my favorite scene in the film. To me VATLD can also be read as a religious mythological allegory, replacing the Catholic religion (in Spain?) with a rough mythology and the conventional family with depraved zombies (who rape Christina). The Midnight version uses the Japanese print of the Rollin cut (same as Wizard) but replaces the censored scenes with the uncensored scenes from the French tape (I think - there's no dialogue - but it looks like my SECAM SHV tape) and adds the garden orgy. VSOM also did a composite which I have not seen but the censored English version is sourced from Spanish subtitled tape - there's an article in the first Video Watchdog in which Tom Weisser talks about scouring Florida area Spanish video shops for rarities and he mentions that he was disappointed that the Spanish subtitled VIRGIN was the censored same Eurocine Rollin zombie version - with inserts from Italian and French releases (I think). The old Spanish video release features the director's cut with the added nude inserts (and the garden orgy) and none of the zombie footage. Although all the credits remain in French, it has a different white on red UNE VIERGE title card. Has anyone seen the Spanish DVD? According ot DVDGo it has an English track. I would think that it would just be the director's cut and that the 90 minute running time is incorrect but who knows.
