Salter and his co-composers (Dessau, Charles Prevein, etc.); RKO and Val Lewton by Roy Webb; Hammer by James Bernard; AIP by Les Baxter and Ronald Stein; Italy has had Morricone, Nicolai, Lavagnino; Spanish horror had Ángel Arteaga and Antón García Abril. And let's not forget the efforts of Herrmann, Waxman, Steiner, Rosenman, Schifrin, Goldsmith (Fromthe top of my head, I can't recall Friedhofer doing music for a horror movie). Any favourites?

Posts: 2123 08/07/11 06:06:00	Hermann's PSYCHO score is probably the most innovative, copied and anxiety provoking horror score of all. Once you hear it you never forget it. Nicolai's scores for VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD, NIGHTMARES COME AT NIGHT, DRACULA PRISONER OF FRANKENSTEIN are unique also. Berto Pisano (DEATH SMILES AT MURDER), Robert Nicolosi (MASK OF SATAN), Carlo Rustichelli (BLOOD AND BLACK LACE) are some favorites and Goblin's score for BEYOND THE DARKNESS is fun, endlessly recycled for gutter trash like HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD and THE OTHER HELL and one can't imagine SUSPIRIA without their score. Also Fabio Frizzi for his 80s scores and Morricone's giallo scores for A LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN, THE COLD EYES OF FEAR, and his minimalist score for THE STENDHAL SYNDROME. Posts: 1114 08/07/11 07:26:27	DRACULA CONTRA FRANKENSTEIN does not contain any original music: it's reused cues from JUSTINE and COUNT DRACULA. The blaring romantic theme associated with Kinski in JUSTINE also reappears in Franco's UN CAPITÁN DE QUINCE AÑOS. The scores for VIRGIN and NIGHTMARE are indeed impressive. The same goes for the harpsichord bits in THE BLOODY JUDGE. Also Nicolai's score for Martino's ALL THE COLOURS OF THE DARK. Herrmann's title cues for PSYCHO, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, MARNIE and TORN CURTAIN (unused) sound like ballet music; I wouldn't be surprised if some choreographer decided to put on a production with them. Or maybe this has already happened. Re: Morricone's THE COLD EYES OF FEAR. That sounds to me as if it used aleatoric techniques, which is rare in film music (I think Schifrin did it as well). I'd also like to mention his two-violin and harpsichord theme for THE TEMPTER Only two cues for this film have been recorded: the theme I mentioned and the organ theme (which I presume was composed and played by Nicolai). I seem to recall this film had some studio lab-created music.

It uses vibrations, dissonance and high pitched instrumentation to create an altered consciousness. Is this on CD? I would really want it if it was!!!! It's a one-man score, the man in question being Enrique Escobar aka "Henry Soteh", Iquino's composer, editor, accountant, executor, occasional housepainter (!) and, according to some rumours, illegitimate son! It's not on CD. Iquino, like Jess Franco at the time, had become fond of reusing themes from film to film but this is largely an all-new score. It only reutilises the "exorcism" scene from the softcore comedy Esas chicas tan pu... The only Spanish horror film work that has made it to CD is that of Alfonso Santisteban, Miguel Madrid's man and a regular composer of TV jingles.

Posts: 1114 08/12/11 14:09:28	Henry Soteh's scores were usually unambitious background stuff but occasionally, as here or as in LA BANDA DE LOS TRES CRISANTEMOS, he could rise to better things. There's an anthology CGD of the work of Santisteban. It includes THE KILLER OF DOLLS but not GRAVEYARD OF HORROR. I don't know if the tune from the latter is original or not: it sounds like a folk tune to me.

Posts: 2123 08/19/11 13:03:32	Nico Fidenco for his BLACK EMMANUELLE scores, especially the first, EMANUELLE IN AMERICA is a classic also along with the eccentric EMANUELLE AND THE WHITE SLAVE TRADE. And then there's his kazoo like score for PORNO HOLOCAUST. Speaking of D'Amato I also have to mention Marcello Giombini's score for EROTIC NIGHTS OF THE LIVING DEAD and his many other Euro genre scores. Posts: 1114 08/19/11 14:25:42	Fidenco could always be counted on for an unusual sound. I tned to associate him with western and erotic rather than horror. There's something incongruously feelgood about PORNO HOLOCAUST, both film and music, which I like. And Giombini, yes! His chordal, folk-like theme for George Eastman's cannibal and his disco-flavoured, crazy-sounding, slightly ironical, credits music for EROTIC NIGHTS. Would also like to mention Albert Glasser and his uninhibited brass writing.

Posts: 12 10/14/11 12:35:29	Remove this ad THe best scores can be enjoyed independently of the film as well as adding atmosphere, suspense, character to the film. Sometimes John Williams is good, although he's not a favorite of mine. Nino Rota's Fellini scores are classics. DeMasi has written many memorable scores, favorites include THE NEW YORK RIPPER. There's one CAM cue heard in numerous Eurohorrors from KILL, BABY, KILL! to NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF, I think it may be De Masi, but I'm not sure.
